Calling all walkers, runners and dashers!

Are you a runner or walker looking for your next half marathon? A first timer looking for an opportunity to lace up your running shoes and give your first 5K a go? Someone looking for an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others? Then this run is for you!

March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month. Colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States.

There are currently no national financial assistance programs available to patients living with colon cancer.  Many colon cancer patients don’t have the resources to pay for life saving treatment in addition to their normal living expenses, forcing them to deal with both a serious illness and the difficulties that come with it, and also with the stress of how to make ends meet.

The Cancer Patient Assistance Fund at the Swedish Cancer Institute (SCI) was created for this reason and is supported entirely by members of the community.  With this fund, the oncology social work team can ensure that a patient’s non-medical needs and expenses are supported during treatment – including groceries, utilities, transportation, rent, medicine and child care.

To ensure that this fund has enough money to meet the challenge posed by colon cancer, Mercer Island Rotary club has partnered with the Cancer Patient Assistance Fund at the Swedish Cancer Institute for Mercer Islands 48th annual Half Marathon.

OsteoStrong Mercer Island is proud to support Mercer Island Rotary, and its health care community partners, to raise funds that can save lives in Washington and the Pacific Northwest, by preventing this terrible disease. All funds raised by event participants will be used to provide support, awareness, and resources for colon cancer prevention.
